Last year we called these robot bugs, because we didn't know what they were.  In August we saw the adults on our tomatoes a lot.  This year we first saw the red-orange nymphs aroung June1, swarming on yellow squash fruit. At first these were misidentified as 'wheel bugs' and so we did not kill them, thinking they were beneficial. Turns out they are just another kind of squash bug.  They are harmful to vegetables and plants. Read about 'em at http://ipm.ncsu.edu/AG295/html/stink_bugs_and_leaffooted_bugs.htm
